Jason Davis, Planetarium Manager at the Cleveland Museum of Natural
History |
Presentation: |
|
"Bad Astronomy!" |
Abstract: |
|
Life in the planetarium business
is tricky. The scope of the knowledge required spans millennia.
More importantly, we are up against an enormous amount of awful
astronomy. "Mars will look as big as the full moon!" "Lock your
pets up or they’ll go blind during the eclipse!" "That moon
landing stuff was totally fake!" "Earth rotates around the Sun."
It’s terrible. Please join me in a presentation with numerous
examples of bad astronomy out in the world of movies, TV shows,
and even articles written by scientists followed by a discussion
on how to cut through the misconceptions and get our message
across. |
